These are just some of the artifacts that will be present in the wing.
This first artifact is a picture taken of Dr. Mengele himself. This is significant as it shows just how normal looking he was. In this picture Mengele looks a little threatening but that maybe just because we know of the horrors he did. Many of the children he experimented on saw him as a friendly face, even calling him "Uncle Mengele." The source of this document is from the United States Holocaust Museum. This source had an overview of Mengele, and explained who he was and his history.
This artifact is a picture of Mengele(smoking on the right), in a situation he was in a lot. Dr. Mengele was in charge of choosing who would go to the gas chambers or crematorium, and who who stay live, usually to work or become on of his experiments. This is an important artifact as it shows how much power Mengele really had. Many even believe that the power that was given to Mengele was one of the reasons he was able to preform his experiments and heinous acts because of the uncontrolled power he was given inside the camps. The source of this article is linked, the source outlines the history of mengele and what he did after WWII
This is a picture of four of the poor children who were victims of Dr. Mengele. This Artifact shows the remorselessness of the doctor, as he seemed to not care for the health and well-being of children. The source of this artifact is linked, the source speaks about the history of Mengele as well, what happened to him after WWII
This a photo of the Herskovic sisters; Helen and Pearl. They were one of the few twins to survive Dr. Mengele's experiments. Twins were exponentially important to the Doctor, he was unhealthily fascinated with them. Hitler wanted a Aryan race and Mengele believe that twins were the key to making such a 'superior' race. This artifact is more disturbing than most due to the fact that it shows how Mengele would actively search out twins, and families would have to determine in a split second decision whether or not to give their children up, or watch them die. However due to their identical looks the sisters were given up right away as there was no question as to them being twins. The source of this artifact is a website that has interviews and written witness statements of twins that were under Mengele. Source linked.
The above picture is of a document that was autographed by Dr. Mengele. The manuscript is dated as April 5th of 1944. It was set to Berlin to the SS personal office. The document even gives what was Mengele's parent's home and office addresses. Many documents were sent to the SS offices from Mengele, however there has only been a handful of retrieved documents, as most were destroyed when the third Reich was taken down. This document is important to his wing as it is just one example, and although we don't know what the document says, it is hard proof that Dr. Mengele was working with the Nazis and going above and beyond for his work. The source of this document is the museum of WWII in Boston. It source is also linked.
This artifact is a wanted poster, for Josef Mengele. After the Nazis were defeated Most of the higher up officers went into hiding. Mengele was among them. Before he ran away Mengele was originally captured, but was released under a false name. A lot of the officers fled to Argentina , and at first Mengele did too. When the allies started looking in Argentina for the remaining Nazis in hiding he fled to south america. Specifically Brazil. Which was where Mengele lived the rest of his life. This artifact is important to this wig because it shows how drastic the authorities were willing to go to find mengele. If some one turned in the doctor they would receive over two million dollars! This article also shows how little the authorities knew about the whereabouts of the Mengele. The source of this artifact is from a website that outlined about mengele and what happened to him after the holocaust as well as his part of the holocaust. The source is linked.
The last artifact we will be showing in the museum is one of the most prized artifacts from holocaust history. Above is picture the skull of Josef Mengele. After Mengele fled and disappeared into hiding, almost everyone was searching for the criminal. Many people wanted him to pay for his crimes against humanity, as well as the cash reward. However no one ever found the devious doctor... alive. The remains of the doctor were found years after he died, from drowning after suffering from a stroke while swimming, in a grave under a different name. At first the investigators did not believe that they found the body, but after running forensic test they confirmed the bones were that of "The Angel of Death." These remains are significant because they allow us to see the doctor's persecuted form finally. It is also good for people who wanted to see their perpetrator once again. Lastly it fills one with awe to peer at the desecrated remains of a man seen as evil as Doctor Joseph Mengele. The source of this artifact is an organisation that looks at old forensic cases, and had some of the people who discovered that the bones were that of Josef Mengele. source is linked.
